Development and Implementation of a System of Tourism Sustainability Indicators.
A system of sustainability indicators in five tourist destinations was developed and implemented as a pilot in Rosarito, Baja California; Los Cabos, Baja California Sur; Cozumel Quintana Roo; Huatulco, Oaxaca and Patzcuaro, Michoacan. Currently the Tourism Sustainability Indicator System is part of the Program for Sustainable Tourism by SECTURAim of the study
The aim of the system is to measure the sustainability of tourist destinations in Mexico, allowing the preservation of natural, cultural, tourist and social resources and to achieve a balanced overall development.
Contributions
FOA Consulting designed the first system of Indicators of Tourism Sustainability in Mexico, with the definition of 22 indicators and 39 variables. It began its implementation in five pilot destinations.
Scope of the study
The System of Tourism Sustainability Indicators evaluates current conditions and measure the results of efforts to promote sustainability according to the conditions in which tourism develops.
The system is an effective tool to support decisions of state and local authorities, allowing to minimize impacts and to maximize the benefits of tourism as an industry.
